Five Simple Landscaping Tips that Improve Home Value

You may be surprised at some of the small tips that can go a long way in improving the value of your home. Following some of these guidelines can help you get top dollar and put you ahead of the competition, which is something we’re all looking for in this tough real estate market. In this article, we’re going to discuss some of the tips for improving the value of your home before customers walk in the door – curb appeal! Quick landscaping fixes can go a long way toward your bottom line, and be very cost effective in the long run.

Our Five Simple Tips

1.) Add Color. Sometimes, a pop of color can change the entire look of your your yard. Planting ground cover at the base of trees or edging a walkway with blooming annuals will draw the eyes to a specific place, and help the house to look more inviting. There’s some interesting research that shows the color “yellow” evokes a mood for buying – so perhaps some sunflowers or marigolds will be your ticket to a quick sale!

2.) Maintain Take a look at your existing landscaping and decide what could be improved upon or removed. Cut back shrubbery that hides the house (like overgrown trees and bushes) and clean up the hedges. A neat lawn gives the impression of a neat and tidy home – which is an attractive selling point for any buyer.

3.) Mind your Lawn If you have a large lawn, make sure it’s in the best condition possible. Install a sprinkler system to keep it hydrated, use a liquid fertilizer, and keep the lawn trim and tidy. This also means making improvements where needed. Don’t be afraid to lay new turf over dead areas, or spread grass seed to encourage new growth in high-traffic parts of your lawn. This is a low-cost way to improve a house tenfold.

4.) Dress up your Driveway – Like our tip on adding color – adding some trees or an attractive boarder to the driveway is a great way to make your home feel more inviting. You want your home to feel welcoming, and the best place to start is the driveway where your potential new buyers are lining up.

5.) Create a rock garden This is an especially useful tip for scant lawns that don’t meet the curb or driveway. A two foot wide strip along both sides of the driveway (or anywhere along the property) can be filled with multicolored rocks, or decorative wood chips. This is an effective way to retain a clean landscape design, at a minimal price – while still adding that extra pop of color.
